The tong torque measurement unit consists of a tong torque sensor, a tong torque indicator, a pressure transmitter, connecting pipelines, and cables.
The sensor is mounted on the tong lanyard. When making up the drill pipe, a tension proportional to the makeup torque is generated on the tong lanyard. This tension acts on the hydraulic oil through the piston inside the sensor, and then is transmitted to the Bourdon tube of the tong torque indicator via the connecting pipeline. The free end of the Bourdon tube produces displacement, which drives the pointer to deflect through the amplifying mechanism, thereby indicating the tension of the tong lanyard.
When using a hydraulic power tong or a casing tong, the tong torque sensor is not required; instead, the pipeline can be directly connected to the hydraulic source of the user’s power tong or casing tong.
To collect the electrical signal of the tong torque, it is necessary to convert the hydraulic signal into a 4-20 mA current signal through the pressure transmitter. This transmitter is generally installed inside the driller’s console cabinet. The hydraulic signal obtained by the sensor drives the pressure transmitter through a tee joint; the current signal output by the pressure transmitter enters the data acquisition unit for processing via the transmitter cable. The data is transmitted to the LCD screen for display through the drill floor communication cable, and to the remote computer for display and recording through the wireless communication module.
