Rubber Cup Type Standpipe Pressure Sensor

The riser pressure measurement unit consists of a riser pressure sensor (see Figure 2–12), a riser pressure indicator (installed inside the driller’s display console), a riser pressure transmitter, connecting pipelines, and cables.

Rubber-diaphragm-type riser pressure sensor :
The mud pressure inside the riser acts on the hydraulic oil through the rubber diaphragm in the sensor, and is then transmitted via the connecting pipeline to the Bourdon tube of the riser pressure indicator. The free end of the Bourdon tube generates displacement, which, through an amplification mechanism, drives the pointer to deflect, thereby indicating the riser pressure. The key to operating this sensor is determining when the rubber diaphragm has been ruptured (which can easily occur if the oil is not fully filled) and how to replace it.

Piston-type riser pressure sensor:
The mud pressure inside the riser acts on the hydraulic oil through the piston in the sensor, and is then transmitted via the connecting pipeline to the Bourdon tube of the riser pressure indicator. The free end of the Bourdon tube generates displacement, which, through an amplification mechanism, drives the pointer to deflect, thereby indicating the riser pressure. The key to operating this sensor is determining when the rubber seal on the piston has been damaged (which can easily occur if the oil is not fully filled) and how to replace it.

To collect the electrical signal of the riser pressure, a pressure transmitter is required to convert the hydraulic signal into a 4–20 mA current signal. This transmitter is generally installed inside the driller’s console cabinet. The hydraulic signal obtained by the sensor drives the pressure transmitter via a tee fitting. The current signal output by the pressure transmitter is sent through the transmitter cable to the data acquisition unit for processing. The processed data is then transmitted via the drilling floor communication cable to the LCD screen for display, and via a wireless communication module to a remote computer for display and recording.
