WCB Water Cooled Brake Introduction

Design Features

Working Principle
The brake is air-actuated. In terms of cooling, it relies on a continuous flow of coolant from either a closed or open-loop cooling system. This efficient cooling mechanism, combined with the use of copper alloy friction plates, enables the rapid transfer of heat generated during braking to the cooling system, ensuring effective heat dissipation and maintaining the brake’s performance and lifespan, especially during continuous or high-intensity use.
Actuation Methods
- Air Tube Actuation: One of the available actuation methods is the air tube. Reinforced neoprene air tubes are standard in all WCB units. These air tubes react accurately to small pressure changes and offer no resistance to movement, increasing the brake’s sensitivity. They are inherently corrosion-resistant, making them ideal for marine environments and other harsh conditions where traditional actuators might be affected by corrosion. No additional coatings or protective treatments are required, and field service is simple and error-free. Additionally, retrofit kits are available to convert an existing single or dual-piston actuated WCB to air tube actuation with no other modifications needed.
- Piston Actuation: The other option is piston actuation. Though not as corrosion-resistant as air tube actuation without additional coatings, piston-actuated WCB brakes are reliable and suitable for many industrial applications.
Applications
The WCB series water cooled brake has a wide range of applications across various industries:
- Oil and Gas Industry: In the oil and gas sector, it is mainly used as an auxiliary brake for drilling drawworks in workover rigs and rigs, helping control speed and tension during drilling for safe and efficient operations.
